Using monomer pumps vs dampen dish

Some containers are designed to pump a small amount of liquid into a reservoir in the lid. These may seem like a good idea for preventing excessive evaporation of monomer, but I don’t recommend using them for this purpose. Why? The reservoir in the lid can allow excess monomer liquid to drain back into the lower container. That’s not a good idea! Once the brush is used, it contains small amounts of both monomer liquid and polymer powder. The powder contains benzoyl peroxide (BPO), which is a curing agent for monomer. Containers like this can allow BPO contaminated monomer to drain from the upper reservoir back into the lower chamber of the container. As these images demonstrate, the monomer can slowly polymerize and harden over time. Even a small amount of BPO contamination can lead to pre-mature polymerization in the lower chamber and will eventually harden, as shown. Even before it completely polymerizes, the contaminated product is likely to cause an increase in service breakdown related issues for clients. That is why I recommend using a monomer dampen dish with lid. The lid has a hole in the center where a brush can be inserted to wet the brush with monomer. By placing a marble over the center hole, evaporation is easier to control. When the service is complete, any remaining monomer should be properly disposed of since it is contaminated with BPO and will polymerize.
